Four jobs in one rally.
Acceleration is the ability to build speed from a still or split-step position. It asks for force quickly, but also for posture and a first step that matches the incoming ball. Lateral push is the side-to-side contribution from the outside leg and hip when you leave the centre. It is directional: you are not just jumping, you are sending the body where the ball is.
Braking and deceleration happen when you arrive. The player has to lower speed, control the centre of mass and create a stable base for contact. A hard first step without a reliable stop can make the stroke late. Balance is the ability to keep the body organized while the surface, racket and next decision change. These qualities overlap in a point, but separating them makes training language more honest.
What Australian Open tracking tells us.
Giles, Peeling and Reid analysed Hawk-Eye tracking from 182 Australian Open singles matches. Their algorithm identified more than 120,000 medium- and high-intensity changes of direction. Across the professional sample, players averaged about 1.6 changes of direction per point, covered roughly 4.8 metres per change and completed a change every 2.7 seconds for men and 3.1 seconds for women. Around two-thirds of the changes exceeded 105 degrees; cutting actions under 45 degrees were more often high intensity.
Those numbers describe modern professional match movement. They help a performance team discuss what “change of direction” means, but they are not a volume target for a recreational player or a junior, and they do not tell us how your court, surface, opponent or playing style should look. The study used elite Grand Slam tracking, not a strength intervention. A data point can sharpen a question without becoming a prescription.
Fatigue changes the test.
A study of 21 nationally ranked young male players (mean age 12.90 years) used a standardized 300-m running protocol to induce fatigue. Before and after it, players performed a pre-planned change-of-direction T-test and a serve-precision test. T-test time increased from 11.75 to 12.99 seconds and the precision score fell from 6 to 4 while perceived exertion rose from 5 to 9. That is a clear response in that protocol and population.
It is not a diagnosis of why a player moves poorly, nor proof that a tired practice should be repeated. The researchers used a running test, a planned T-test and a defined serve task; a match includes perception, anticipation, tactical choices and different fatigue sources. A tired score tells you the task was harder under those conditions. It does not identify an injury, prescribe rest for every player or show that one gym exercise changes the result.
What a metric leaves out.
A change-of-direction count is a description of an event, not a complete definition of footwork. Hawk-Eye can locate a path and angle; it cannot see why the player moved there, whether the split-step was early, or how the next shot changed the choice. A 180-degree turn in a planned test also differs from braking after a deceptive drop shot on a particular surface. That is why the Australian Open numbers are useful context for coaches and not a target to copy.
The same caution applies to fatigue. A slower T-test after a 300-metre run may reflect the protocol's accumulated demand, but it does not tell you whether your technique, attention, legs or confidence would respond the same way in a match. Comparing scores can be informative when the task and conditions are repeated; one bad day is not a diagnosis.
Build the movement in layers.
Start with positions you can control. A lateral lunge asks whether the hip can accept a side load; a band walk gives low-speed feedback; a single-leg reach makes balance visible. Add a drop step when the stop itself is the question. Only then consider a skater hop, where the lateral push and landing happen quickly. These are examples of an order for thinking, not a universal progression or a demand to complete every movement.
On court, connect each layer to perception. Begin from a split-step, choose a direction from a coach's feed, arrive under control and recover to a neutral base. A planned drill can rehearse foot placement, while live play supplies the ball flight and tactical choice. Keep the court dose and the gym dose in the same conversation; a demanding movement day may not belong immediately before a long match.

Put the pieces back on court.
A useful progression in thinking is not “more agility.” It is a conversation between qualities. Can you produce a first step without losing posture? Can you push sideways and then lower speed across multiple steps? Can you hold a stable base long enough to strike? Can you repeat the task after a long rally without turning a difficult test into a diagnosis?
Strength work provides a controllable environment for selected qualities. Tennis practice adds perception, timing, surface and tactical choice. A coach can observe whether the exercise transfers to your stroke or movement solution. Limits worth keeping visible.
The Australian Open study is a professional match description. The fatigue study is a small study of nationally ranked boys around age 13. Neither gives a universal dose, a timetable or a medical conclusion for you. Adapt the question to your age, level, surface, schedule and guidance from a qualified professional. Stop a movement that hurts rather than trying to prove a point.
