The serve starts
at the ground.

A tennis serve is not an arm exercise with a jump added at the end. Force is created and transferred through a sequence: the feet meet the ground, the legs and trunk organize it, the shoulder and arm carry it on, and the racket turns that motion into ball speed. Strength work can support pieces of this chain while technique still owns the stroke.

Ground to racket.

When you load for a serve, your legs bend and press into the court. The pelvis and trunk rotate and extend, the shoulder complex positions the arm, and the forearm and hand deliver the racket to the ball. This is a coordination problem as much as a force problem. A stronger isolated muscle does not automatically make the sequence faster; timing, range, contact point, balance and a player's technical choices still matter.

The energy-flow study linked below examined expert players with motion capture and inverse dynamics, then followed them for two seasons with an overuse-injury questionnaire. Better quality of energy transfer from trunk to the hand-and-racket segment was associated with higher ball velocity and lower upper-limb joint kinetics in that sample. Injured players showed a different pattern. That is an observation about a case-control group and a biomechanical relationship, not a reason to diagnose your serve or promise a specific adaptation.

Useful translation: train a quality the serve needs—leg drive, trunk control, shoulder rotation or force expression—then return to the racket and let a qualified coach assess the whole motion.

What serve studies tested.

A six-week randomized study enrolled 30 healthy, nationally ranked male juniors aged 13. The training group completed three 60–70 minute sessions each week, combining core strength, elastic resistance and medicine-ball work. Serve velocity improved in the training group; serve accuracy did not show a significant change. Shoulder rotation range of motion improved in both groups. The participants were young, male and already competitive, and the programme was supervised. Those details are part of the result, not footnotes to discard.

A newer randomized study compared one versus two weekly sessions of upper-limb plyometric training for 47 male youth players (mean age about 15.6) over eight weeks. Both doses improved measured shoulder strength, medicine-ball throwing tests and serve velocity relative to a regular-training control. It does not establish that a particular dose suits adults, women, beginners or a player managing symptoms. It also tested a defined intervention, not five lifts copied into every gym.

The kinetic-chain case-control paper offers another boundary. Its relationships are biomechanical associations in expert players, and its injury classification came from questionnaire follow-up. Associations help generate coaching questions; they do not prove that one exercise caused a change in an individual serve.

Read the transfer, not a headline.

“Ground to racket” is a useful map, but it is not a claim that force travels in one identical line for every player. A serve includes a stance, toss, loading rhythm, leg drive, trunk motion, shoulder rotation, arm action and contact. The order and timing are coordinated with the ball. A gym movement can give one of those ingredients a repeatable task; it cannot reproduce the toss, the opponent, the bounce or the decision to hit a particular target.

That distinction changes how to read an exercise label. “Leg strength” is not “serve speed.” “Shoulder rotation” is not “a healthy shoulder.” The transfer sentence should answer a modest question: what component does this movement make easier to practise, and what part remains on court? If the sentence sounds like a result guarantee, it is asking the lift to say more than the evidence can support.

It also keeps technique in the right place. A coach can watch whether the exercise leaves you able to hold posture and return to a consistent contact. They can adjust a toss, grip or rhythm when the racket is in your hand. Questions a session can answer.

Before a lift, name the component you are exploring: pushing into the floor, resisting unwanted trunk motion, expressing force with a medicine ball or controlling a shoulder position. During it, use the cues in the app and stop if a movement hurts. After it, ask whether the next tennis session feels technically organised, not whether a single set changed a number. A result that needs a radar gun, video or clinical examination belongs to that tool or professional.

Training context matters as much as the exercise name. A heavy lower-body session before a long serve practice may compete with the court task; a light, familiar option may leave attention for technique. Equipment, level and pain screening narrow what is appropriate. Keep a simple observation note if it helps: what the exercise was meant to practise, how the movement felt, and what your coach noticed on court. That note is not a measurement of adaptation, and it should not become a reason to push through pain. It is a way to keep the question attached to the context in which it matters. The next court visit supplies the missing environment: a ball flight, a contact point and a real decision.

A slam gives force expression a clear start and finish with a medicine ball. It is not a substitute for racket contact or a velocity test.

Band external rotation

Shoulder · Resistance band · Beginner

Controlled external rotation trains a shoulder component that supports arm positioning. It cannot inspect your shoulder or correct serve mechanics.

Strength is one input.

Serve speed is a measured outcome with many contributors: technique, racket and ball, contact point, coordination, anthropometrics, fatigue, learning and the quality of the training stimulus. The junior studies above measured changes after structured programmes; they did not show that a goblet squat, cable lift or band rotation alone creates the same result. The kinetic-chain study described relationships; it did not provide a personal assessment.

When to stop the question.
